I can use both but when it comes to more complicated patterns (lace/colorwork) i prefer to use chart ...
Pen and paper usually. Sometimes a highlighter and mark off each row. With colorwork its easier since you can lock at the yarn on the needles to determen which row you are on/just knitted. Most charted pattern i have worked withdoes repeat, and after a while you might remember/know how it is done - no chart needed anymore. Are you working on a specific pattern? :) I like written ones, but i am learning about charts! Both at the same time is the best! But if I had to pick I prefer the chart. Written instructions can get confusing on big repetitions, and charts work in any language :) I like both as sometimes both of them are required, what I find important is that there are no mistakes in both instructions or charts.
I recall knitting a gansey where some mistakes were made in both instructions and charts and that caused a lot of trouble.
I'm a beginner so I struggle with both right now. I prefer charts and love to do cables
