Sometimes a highlighter and mark off each row. With colorwork its easier since you can lock at the yarn on the needles to determen which row you are on/just knitted. Most charted pattern i have worked with does repeat, and after a while you might remember/know how it is done - no chart needed anymore. Pen and paper usually. Sometimes a highlighter and mark off each row. With colorwork its easier since you can lock at the yarn on the needles to determen which row you are on/just knitted. Most charted pattern i have worked with  does repeat, and after a while you might remember/know how it is done - no chart needed anymore.

Both at the same time is the best! But if I had to pick I prefer the chart. Written instructions can get confusing on big repetitions, and charts work in any language :)
