Why did everyone start Crocheting
Hi everyone, I'd love to hear stories of why you started crocheting or knitting and what your first item was. I always wanted to learn. I saw a little boy crocheting while waiting to be seen at the dr. I was a kid, too, but I never saw anyone in my family do it. So I asked my mom what is that she said knitting, and I was like, I want to do that too. But when we went to Walmart, it was actually crochet, and we bought 2 hooks, I think, because we thought that's what it was, but the lady said u only need one so maybe we did buy just 1 not sure it was so long ago I cnt remeber the brand of yarn it was but I do remeber the color it was blue with frills on it idk but it was kind of like mohair how it sticks out but thicker idk how to explain it but that was my first and I gave up because we didn't have youtube back then like we do now to help but I tried again in 2016 when I was pregnant with my daughter I made her a baby blanket that we still have to this day and a bunny then amigurumi and hats balaclavas and so on. I love how easy it is to crochet 1 hook easy to pick up again and work on if you got to run an Chase the kids but I love to make something anything atleast once and I love to read instructions and watch tutorials. I love the magic ring method. Please share. I would love to hear your story. I don't have any friends I can bond with over crochet. so I'd love to hear from you thank u HiI was 12 when I started, my mum had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer, she was really ill and had to go into hospital. There was no one who could take me and brothers and sisters (5 in total) so we ended up in a children's home. There was a girl a couple of years older than me making a blanket.(It was very boring in this children's home) and she taught me. Basic granny square as I didn't know how to finish off as this other girl left a couple of weeks after I met her, I just kept going. It ended up bigger than a double bed lol. I wanted to give it to my mum as a present when she got better. ( 30 plus years ago a 12 years old me didn't understand what terminal meant) unfortunately I never got to give it to her as she died about 4 month later. It ended up being like my comfort blanket until I left care, I was 19. static/image/common/user_online.gif BarbLoblaw static/image/common/clock.gif 2022-3-7 14:30

I was taught crochet and knitting at school. "Needlework" was a compulsory subject for girls, the boys went into their own workshop (mainly woodwork, but also with things like metal driving ? copper). We started at age 7 until 13, it was the Seventies then.
My first crocheted object was a pin cushion, a rectangle made to practise single crochet, folded in half, crocheted together with a picot edge and stuffed. Mine was a bit wonky and a very garish yellow colour (the Seventies...). I kept it a long time, it was useful after all! I cannot remember the first thing I knit, I think it was a scarf (also yellow btw) when I was eight. All of the girls in my class made the same model with different colours.
Looking back, I realize we were taught a lot of useful stuff, knitting mittens and socks, how to mend holes, ... and of course sewing, but that is a whole chapter of its own. I saw people making cool amigurumi things and I wanted to learn to make them instead of buying them (the shipping can be crazy) so I got my yarn and some hooks and just crocheted a tiny flower, it was terrible haha. I missed stitches, didn't understand back loop vs front loops etc but I got it. Then I made a bear with just as many missed stitches and finally I made a rabbit and I'd learnt enough it came out pretty good!
I take long breaks from it when my brain just doesn't feel like it, and then just pick it up. This time I've decided I want to make a lot of bookmarks.
I started crocheting and knitting when I was 18. The crochet, I made doilies and borders for shelves. why crochet, because at the time I loved and still love lace. I would have liked to learn bobbin lace but I didn't have the opportunity.
And knitting at the same age when my friends had children, I was making bras. I took a 40-year break and resumed when my grandson was born, knitting, crocheting, sewing........
In fact, I'm quite manual, I made my own wooden sewing box.
Here is my story It's funny, but I can't remember. We were taught basic knitting at school (I can't even remember what we made). My mother must have taught me crochet, and my first were granny squares.I like decorative stitches and I have a really old book with lots of these I've tried (both crochet and knitting). And I still wear knitted cardigans every day I made nearly 30 years ago! I started with knitting first, a scarf my grandmother helped me make but I found it to be quite boring haha. Many year passed and I found myself wanting to create my own wardrobe. The first item I tried to crochet was a patchwork cardigan (came out really wonky and ended up frogging) and from then I continued with both crafts, learning more and more each pattern I made. I was pretty old to start crocheting, at about age 25ish or even later. I copied my friend who crocheted during pregnancy. I thought, well I could do that too, and I cannot stop up to date :)
As a kid my mom tried to reach me to knit. But I just couldn’t keep my tension at one level.
I kinda regret wasting all the years I could have been crocheting. static/image/common/user_online.gif celiamerula static/image/common/clock.gif 2022-3-4 05:25

Wow, thank you. For sharing, I appreciate it very much. I can see the pincushion in my head, which is a great, easy way to practice. My grandmother taught me so long ago. My job has a lot of down time, so I crochet to keep myself busy. static/image/common/user_online.gif LociMoon static/image/common/clock.gif 2022-3-7 18:56
