I've used away waste knots on the front in crewel work and gold work, to avoid flipping an  awkward large frame.

I'm not sure I'd trust myself with this method on my cross stitch. I'd prefer that my back is messier and my front is perfect. I don't give a monkey's about how my back looks, as long as a messy back can't be seen through the front, and it doesn't cause bulges in framing.

I think we get a bit obsessed about neat backs. I've played with right sides the same work, and yup it's tricky, but cross stitch isn't meant to be this kind of work.
