A tent stitch is basically a half stitch but when you come back up the fabric you go the long way (hope that makes sense), if you do a normal half stitch it distorts the fabric to much. So going the long way helps keep the fabric taut. Tent stitching is also awesome because it goes twice as fast. I only do them with big projects with tiny stitches.
Tent stitches are typically used for gobelins that are stitched with pure new wool. Cross Stitch isn't very comfortable with this material because of the thickness.

I know what you mean. But if your stitches are small enough like when using 2 over 1 on 25 ct, it looks great with the standard cotton floss used for cross stitch.
