I think most people don't understand the time that goes into knitting or crocheting something when you can buy cute or useful items for little money (socks, mittens, keychains...). Only to those I consider "knit" worthy! Most people don't appreciate the time, money and effort that goes into making a handmade gift IMHO. If someone is a crafter themselves they usually are very appreciative.
