When learning how to knit and crochet I used the Harmony Guide to Knitting and the Harmony Guide to Crochet. This series of books demonstrates how to knit and crochet in great detail, showing how to do both. I would suggest these books when learning and as a reference because they show how to read patterns and charts and also explain charted and in words the various stitches. To this day after over 40 years of knitting, I still refer to my Harmony Guides if I can't understand how to do a particular stitch especially when it comes to crochet since I don't crochet much. These books just explain so clearly how to do stitches, read charts, and patterns.
