This pattern is worked from the front, from right to left, with single crochet (SC) on the top row back loop, and double crochet (DC) in the row below of the same color. Each row alternates between color A and color B. The chart shows a numbered column on the beginning and end of each row, indicating the color you will be crocheting the entire row with, either A or B. These columns also count as your border stitches.
The background color A is indicated by purple, and the feather color B is indicated by white in the chart. The design example uses black as the background and gradient stripes in green, teal, blue and purple for the feathers. You can use any combination of contrasting colors to create this design.
