Very honestly a lot depends on what you plan to make, the type of fibre you want (natural or synthetic), where you are, or if you want an indy producer or mass market, etc.

Over the last 10 years or so I've seen the number indy producers just skyrocket and the mass market producers come and go.  There are just a huge number of sources for yarn now which makes it fun going yarn shopping.

One brand, if you are in North America is Cascade which is quite dependable for quality.  You can get any weight from lace to bulky.
