Youtube is going to be a better resource for a beginner knitter than any book, but it may be helpful to have a reference book just so they have a bunch of knitting terminology they can use to aid in searching youtube.

That said, I don't have any book I'd point to as a solid reference for a beginner knitter. It may exist, but I haven't seen it. :( I think you'd be better off trying to find a good youtube video explaining how to read a pattern, and showing how to search youtube for what you need when a pattern or technique gets confusing.
