Those dark grey areas mean No stitches.
Just ignore them and continue according to the chart.
Row 3: 3 edge stitches (yellow), YO, knit, YO, knit, YO, knit 3, central stitch (yellow), then continue according to the chart but from the left to the right: knit 3, YO, knit, YO, knit, YO, 3 edge stitches = total 23 stitches.
Etc.

Hope this helps :)

The "no stitch" areas are added to the chart for convenience, and so the chart looks accurate and presentable.
I would say, the pattern is very well written, the number of stitches for each row is stated on the right for self-control.
