This is to make sure the design is centered. I do not have any fancy hoops. I did once have a frame made of wood that had rollers on the top and bottom. It kept everything taunt. I usually stitch a thread to show the center top to bottom, then another side to side.  This is to make sure the design is centered.  I do not have any fancy hoops.  I did once have a frame made of wood that had rollers on the top and bottom.  It kept everything taunt.

It is better to use scroll frames for large project. It can refrain from the dirt for the cloth.Though, you need to practice alot because you feel a little bit unease if you used to stitch on hand.
