The name "Reader's Digest" is talking about 'digesting' information through reading. Very different from this site! I think that magazine sort of abridged things to make it easier for readers to understand and absorb the information (or, "digest" it). To digest in reading is sort of like to ponder, and to come to understand through that pondering. :)
