I have been doing mine from the top down, from the left to the right. I think I may go back to doing it from the center out. Additionally I find it helpful to grid the fabric and I think there is a post in here on how to do it. To grid the fabric you use long running stitches of a single strand of thread that will stand out against the fabric. Make them going both across and up and down the fabric for every 10 stitches - so if you are using fabric that would be 2 over 2, it would be every 20 strands on the fabric that you grid. Then you fill in the spaces according to the pattern. As to the overdyed threads - they look lovely but they are very expensive - usually $2 or more per skein. 0 [useip] => 96.241.43.234 [port] => 53114 [invisible] => 0 [anonymous] => 0 [usesig] => 0 [htmlon] => 0 [bbcodeoff] => 0 [smileyoff] => -1 [parseurloff] => 0 [attachment] => 0 [rate] => 4 [ratetimes] => 1 [status] => 0 [tags] => [comment] => 0 [replycredit] => 0 [position] => 11 ) [12] => Array ( [pid] => 9436369 [fid] => 84 [tid] => 257855 [first] => 0 [author] => mikaa1 [authorid] => 74882 [subject] => [dateline] => 1454494042 [message] => Bardzo ładny haft, ja bym zaczęła od centrum haftu [useip] => 83.20.57.64 [port] => 55788 [invisible] => 0 [anonymous] => 0 [usesig] => 1 [htmlon] => 0 [bbcodeoff] => -1 [smileyoff] => -1 [parseurloff] => 0 [attachment] => 0 [rate] => 0 [ratetimes] => 0 [status] => 0 [tags] => [comment] => 0 [replycredit] => 0 [position] => 12 ) [13] => Array ( [pid] => 9522624 [fid] => 84 [tid] => 257855 [first] => 0 [author] => Raidersterry [authorid] => 59453 [subject] => [dateline] => 1455690895 [message] => for this I would start in the center but really its all a matter of preference [useip] => 174.51.104.220 [port] => 60374 [invisible] => 0 [anonymous] => 0 [usesig] => 1 [htmlon] => 0 [bbcodeoff] => -1 [smileyoff] => -1 [parseurloff] => 0 [attachment] => 0 [rate] => 0 [ratetimes] => 0 [status] => 0 [tags] => 0 [comment] => 0 [replycredit] => 0 [position] => 13 ) [14] => Array ( [pid] => 9572784 [fid] => 84 [tid] => 257855 [first] => 0 [author] => Darcyandrick [authorid] => 75349 [subject] => [dateline] => 1456262623 [message] => [quote][size=2][url=forum.php?mod=redirect&goto=findpost&pid=9186495&ptid=257855][color=#999999][img]static/image/common/user_online.gif[/img] mfsanders [img]static/image/common/clock.gif[/img] 2015-12-20 09:31[/color][/url][/size] Some stitchers find the center of their fabric and begin the center of the pattern there. Never heard of gridding the fabric, but it makes so much sense especially on a large, complicated pattern.  That will be the next new tool I utilize - thanks.

My mother in law told me to always start in the middle, and she's been stitching forever, so...I like to follow her advice!

Thanks ctstahl, I have decided to start from the centre too ! After studying the chart more, there are logical sections. I can begin in the middle, work outwards.  Post time 2016-10-12 10:42

With overdyed threads, you should stitch your cross stitches one by one to get a nice shading.

Thanks Nannette, you are right. I've recently tried completing the stitch - it is so much lovelier !  Post time 2016-10-12 10:41

Thanks Nanels, starting in the centre makes sense. After studying the chart a bit more, the designs are in sections, I can actually start from the middle, and continue to work outwards.  Post time 2016-10-12 10:39
