I want to start a really large piece (for me) - Space Traveler by HAED. I don't know how many threads to use on 20ct Aida for better effect. I always used 1 thread when I worked with 20ct. But when I look closely, I can see a little of blank space - and it's driving me crazy! On a small project it isn't so visible, but what with a bigger one? Use two threads? But when tried with 2, I couldn't pull the threads without damage (after a few stitches it looked like... worn out sweater).
Now I have a dillemma - start working with one thread and have hope that the blank spaces won't be big enough to see or choose two threads and have hope not to produce used carpet instead?
Please help me :)

For the best coverage of the fabric use the following:
11-count aida - 3 strands
14-count aida (or 28-count evenweave over 2 threads) - 2 or 3 strands
16-count aida - 2 strands
18-count aida - 1 strands
22-count hardanger - 1 strand
anything higher than 18 I use 1 strand
Try using the continental stitch or half cross with two strands and see if it covers.
Do a small patch on some scrap or on the corner in a dark colour. Make it a pretty solid piece of 2.5cm X 2.5cm. Make sure it's the darkest colour you will be using. So it would be black. Does it cover enough? The continental isn't really used for cross stitch, it's used more for tapestry and completely covers the back of the work in loops. A google search would bring up a description. Mind you this will cost more in cotton floss, but may well be worth the extra cost if it covers well.
Hold your work out at arm's length to see how it looks, too. Remember that HAED designs are very large. So while the white spaces may be very visible to you now as you work on a small section of the pattern, once it's all done and viewed from a greater distance, it might not show as much.
Another tip I've heard is to use off-white fabric to minimize the show-through, but I've never tried it with a HAED.
