I have the EZ Stitch lap frame, the kind you sit on.  It's definitely not perfect, but it's portable, and for those projects where I really need a frame rather than a hoop (such as one that has lots of beads), it works okay.  I'd really like to get a floor stand, but I'd like to see it before I buy it, and where I live, it's just not possible to do that (I have to order most of my supplies online - there are almost NO cross stitch supplies within 1 1/2 hour drive).

I have an Élan lap stand from Artisan Designs.  I wasn't sure if I would like it to sue sitting in a chair with my feet propped up, but it works great and I love it.  I found it on eBay for about 1/3 the cost, which makes me like it even better!
