I also keep yarn needles, a thick plastic stick of some kind to push down stuffing, and a stitch counter.

markers with hook sizes are great to put on wips so you don't have to try and remember what hook you were using.

I like crocheting with plarn! Take old plastic bags, cut them into continuous strips, tie them together, bam, you got plastic yarn. Plarn! Really great for outdoors items and especially great for making sleeping mattresses to donate to unhomed people. Since plastic yarn acts as a great barrier between the body and the ground, folks can stay far warmer when sleeping outdoors on plarn mattresses! :)
