For socks I like yarns that are designed for, well, socks (think Regia, Opal, etc). They don't have to be self-striping but need to have specific fiber content and size (thickness).
I loved knitting and still enjoy wearing gloves and a cowl that I made from yarn having 70% silk, 30% yak.
