I use clear fingernail polish. I just take the fabric with the edge facing me and brush it on. It;s cheap too :)

I used to whipstitch the edges but I just bought Fraystop. Will try it for my next project.

If you want to use masking tape, you need to make sure that you leave enough of a border to be able to cut it off once you are done. If you don't remove it, your fabric will yellow over time
