Large pieces

Has anyone got any hints and tips on how to start stitching a large design? How do you mark out grids etc if you do. Do you use hoops/frames and which one would you recommend?

xxxtglxxx Publish time 2022-6-9 21:19

Large designs (haed etc) i have started top left corner and gridded as i needed (per page). Now though, i buy pre gridded.I use frames, as I cannot hold so much fabric without losing patience. If im tired, i just stitch something smaller that evening, in hand.I dont always like sitting at a frame.

gingerg Publish time 2019-2-15 07:42

I usually stitch a thread to show the center top to bottom, then another side to side. This is to make sure the design is centered.I do not have any fancy hoops.I did once have a frame made of wood that had rollers on the top and bottom. It kept everything taunt.

orionjes12 Publish time 2022-5-6 07:36

It is better to use scroll frames for large project. It can refrain from the dirt for the cloth.Though, you need to practice alot because you feel a little bit unease if you used to stitch on hand.

Grid your fabric, as it's a ' cover all design ' you can use a washable fabric marker pen, these usually disappear with a spray of cold water or you can use DMC easy count guideline, a red plastic thread that' easy to see, re-usable and cannot be split by your needle when stitching, so it'll pull out easily. Start at either a top or bottom corner, I start at the top left and work my way across in blocks of 10x10, finishing each block before moving to the next. Use a copy of your pattern as it's going to get VERY dog-eared and messy as you mark off stitched areas:)

doris Publish time 2011-7-21 15:09

Wow have never seen that dmc easy count guideline before, have just added it on my list :)

I have just found a conversion chart from dimensions threads to dmc so i am going to do that this afternoon so i can get my floss order in :)

Does anyone use a frame for large work?? and if so what would you recommend?

threadbare Publish time 2011-7-21 20:55

I use an elbesee clip an sewscroll frame with a floor stand... much easier than sewing your fabric onto a frame... holds tension very well too. :)

Flirti Publish time 2011-7-22 17:45

i don´t use a hoop, so i tape large pieces - or stick together with pins, so i do only have the area where i stitch! i also use a pillow under my stitching arm (ellobow), it´s more comfortable than without.
