My first big pattern - Barney the Dinosaur - Alan Dart
Edited by Tyses at 2017-7-16 00:59I figured I should share because I am proud of myself for tackling a big pattern for the first time.
My uncle who has a diagnosis of "Mental Retardation with Autistic like tendencies" was admited to the hospital with a major heath problem. We didn't know if he was going to make it through this. Thankfully he came right out of surgery and was on a roller coaster to some sort of recovery. The first thing I thought of was what would make him smile, I did amazon shopping and had squishy light up toys, pompoms, balls and other toys. Then I thought to myself, I should try and knit him something. That's when I started looking up characters from his favorite shows, he loves Barney, Sesame Street, Happy Feet, anything Disney. I found Alan Darts Barney the Dinosaur pattern and ordered it on amazon (before I found this site). When that pattern showed up I figured out how I could afford the DK yarn, so I messed with some different stuff and ended up using just a red heart yarn on a size 7(US) needle, I know it's practically a sin to switch yarn and needle sizes when they are specific about it. ;P
About a week and a half later I was starting to stuff and sew this mess of pieces together. It worked!
This week I was able to come home ot Ohio to visit the hospital, he's doing much better but still has a long way to go. When I pulled out the Barney his face lit up, and that made it all worth it. This week he also had the ability to speak since they downsized his trach and put on a speaking valve. He would keep pointing at the Barney and kep saying Tyler. It melted my heart. It's amazing what knitting can do!
I am getting the yarn to make Baby Bop tonight! I know this was probably boring to read but I figured I would share. <3
Very nice! You did a great job, and your story is very heartwarming. Thank you for sharing. What a touching story and what a beautiful work... Knitted garments and toys make one of the kindest, most thoughtful gifts as they mean you spared your time, the most valuable thing, for the receiver. You're such a kind soul, well done:) static/image/common/user_online.gif LERA-LERA static/image/common/clock.gif 2017-7-16 02:34
